María Kodama (ur. 10 marca 1937 – zm. 26 marca 2023) była argentyńską pisarką i tłumaczką. Wdowa po autorze Jorge Luisie Borgesie, była jedynym właścicielem jego majątku po jego śmierci w 1986 roku. Borges przekazał Kodamie swoje prawa autorskie w testamencie sporządzonym w 1979 roku, kiedy była jego sekretarzem literackim i zapisał jej jego cały majątek w 1985 roku. Pobrali się w 1986 roku, na krótko przed śmiercią Borgesa.
Kodama była córką argentyńskiej matki pochodzenia szwajcarsko-niemieckiego, angielskiego i hiszpańskiego oraz japońskiego ojca. Spotkała Borgesa, gdy była studentką, na jednym z jego wykładów w Buenos Aires na temat literatury islandzkiej.
Po śmierci w 1975 roku dziewięćdziesięciodziewięcioletniej matki Borgesa, Leonor Acevedo, z którą mieszkał przez całe życie, Kodama została sekretarzem literackim Borgesa i miała okazję — na zaproszenie opiekunki Borgesa, „Fanny” — pomagać mu jako niewidomemu starcowi w jego częstych podróżach zagranicznych w późniejszych latach, kiedy otrzymywał wiele zaproszeń od instytucji z całego świata. Kodama pomógła Borgesowi pisać, ponieważ stracił wzrok. Współpracowała z nim przy Breve antología anglosajona (1978) i Atlasie (1984, relacja z ich wspólnych podróży) oraz przy tłumaczeniu Młodszej Eddy Snorriego Sturlusona.
Kodama poślubiła Borgesa przez przedstawicieli w postępowaniu cywilnym w Paragwaju w dniu 26 kwietnia 1986 r. W czasie ślubu Borges był śmiertelnie chory i zmarł na raka w Genewie w Szwajcarii 14 czerwca 1986 r.
Kodama była prezesem Fundación Internacional Jorge Luis Borges, którą założyła w Buenos Aires w 1988 roku.
Po śmierci Borgesa Kodama renegocjował prawa do tłumaczenia swoich dzieł na język angielski. W szczególności rozwiązała wieloletnią umowę między Borgesem a tłumaczem Normanem Thomasem di Giovannim, na mocy której, tantiemy za szereg tłumaczeń, przy których współpracowali, były równo podzielone między autora i tłumacza. Nowe tłumaczenia autorstwa Andrew Hurleya zostały zamówione i opublikowane w celu zastąpienia tłumaczeń di Giovanniego, którym pozwolono wyjść z nakładu.
Maríę Kodamę poznałem dzięki Isabel Bau Madden z którą od lat przyjaźnię się w Nowym Jorku. Umówiliśmy się na wspólne spotkanie 2 listopada 1999 r. w Central Parku w Nowym Jorku. Muszę powiedzieć, że był to znakomity czas na zdjęcia, gdyż przyroda nie odciągała od głównego obiektu, jakim niewątpliwie była Kodama. Zdjęcia wyciągnęłem po latach, kiedy od Isabel dowiedziałem się o śmierci Kodamy. Za każdym razem, jak po kilkudziesięciu latach patrzy się na zrobione zdjęcia, stają przed oczami sytuacje w czasie robienia. Pamiętam, że było przeraźliwie zimno, mimo że to początek listopada – Maria i Isabel były w futrach. To też wspaniale dla zdjęć.
Asertywne administrowanie majątkiem Borges przez Kodamę zaowocowało również gorzkim sporem z francuskim wydawcą Gallimardem dotyczącym ponownej publikacji wszystkich dzieł Borgesa w języku francuskim, a Pierre Assouline w Le Nouvel Observateur (sierpień 2006) nazwał ją „przeszkodą w rozpowszechnianiu dzieła Borgesa”. Kodama podjął kroki prawne przeciwko Assouline, uznając uwagę za nieuzasadnioną i zniesławiającą, żądając symbolicznego odszkodowania w wysokości jednego euro.
Kodama zmarł 26 marca 2023 roku w wieku 86 lat w Vicente López w Greater Buenos Aires.

María Kodama (10 March 1937 – 26 March 2023) was an Argentine writer and translator. The widow of author Jorge Luis Borges, she was the sole owner of his estate after his death in 1986. Borges had bequeathed to Kodama his rights as author in a will written in 1979, when she was his literary secretary, and bequeathed to her his whole estate in 1985. They were married in 1986, shortly before Borges' death.
Kodama was the daughter of an Argentine mother of Swiss-German, English and Spanish descent and a Japanese father. She met Borges when she was a student, at one of his lectures in Buenos Aires on Icelandic literature.
After the death in 1975 of Borges's ninety-nine-year-old mother, Leonor Acevedo, with whom he had lived all his life, Kodama became Borges’s literary secretary and had the opportunity—at the invitation of Borges's caretaker, "Fanny"—to assist him as a blind old man in his frequent travels abroad during his later years, when he received many invitations by institutions from around the world. Kodama helped Borges write, as he had lost his sight. She collaborated with him in Breve antología anglosajona (1978) and Atlas (1984, an account of their travels together) and in the translation of the Younger Edda by Snorri Sturluson.
Kodama married Borges through representatives in a civil proceeding in Paraguay on 26 April 1986. This was a common practice for Argentines wishing to circumvent the restrictions on divorce in their country at the time, and Borges was already married once but for many years estranged from his first wife. At the time of the wedding, Borges was terminally ill and died of cancer in Geneva, Switzerland, on 14 June 1986.
Kodama was president of the Fundación Internacional Jorge Luis Borges, which she founded in Buenos Aires in 1988.
After Borges's death, Kodama renegotiated the English translation rights of his works. In particular, she terminated a longstanding agreement between Borges and the translator Norman Thomas di Giovanni under which royalties for a number of translations on which they collaborated were divided equally between author and translator. New translations by Andrew Hurley were commissioned and published to replace the di Giovanni translations, which were allowed to go out of print.
I met María Kodama thanks to Isabel Bau Madden, with whom I have been friends for years in New York. We arranged to meet together on November 2, 1999 in Central Park, New York. I must say that it was a great time for photos, because nature did not distract from the main object, which undoubtedly was Kodama. I pulled the photos out years later, when Isabel told me about Kodama's death. Every time you look at the photos taken several decades later, the situations at the time of taking come to mind. I remember it was freezing cold even though it was early November – Maria and Isabel were wearing fur coats. It's also great for photos.
Kodama's assertive administration of the Borges estate also resulted in a bitter dispute with the French publisher Gallimard regarding the republication of the complete works of Borges in French, with Pierre Assouline in Le Nouvel Observateur (August 2006) calling her "an obstacle to the dissemination of the works of Borges". Kodama took legal action against Assouline, considering the remark unjustified and defamatory, asking for a symbolic compensation of one euro.
Kodama died on 26 March 2023 at the age of 86, in Vicente López, Greater Buenos Aires.
