I właśnie o tym opowiada twórca - który jest narratorem w tym filmie. Film jest bowiem formą zapisu jego wypowiedzi na temat życia artysty. Szajna w pewien sposób uznał ten film za swoje credo.
Józef Szajna (ur. 13 marca 1922 w Rzeszowie, zm. 24 czerwca 2008 w Warszawie, został pochowany na Cmentarzu Powązkowskim) – malarz, scenograf, reżyser, profesor ASP w Warszawie.
Urodził się w spolonizowanej od kilku stuleci rodzinie włoskiego lub niemieckiego ]pochodzenia, jako jeden z trzech synów kolejowego maszynisty Juliana Szajny i jego żony Karoliny z Pieniążków.
W okresie okupacji niemieckiej był uczestnikiem ruchu oporu, działając w Związku Walki Zbrojnej. Aresztowany trafił do obozu koncentracyjnego KL Auschwitz, a później do Buchenwaldu, był więźniem Karnej Kompanii. Przeżycia obozowe znalazły swe odbicie w twórczości. Jego twórczość to technika malarska, połączona z asamblażem i kolażem, której treścią jest zagłada, zniszczenie, przemijanie.
Studiował w krakowskiej ASP, dyplom z grafiki otrzymując w 1952 roku, zaś dyplom ze scenografii w 1953 roku. W latach 1955–1966 był współzałożycielem, dyrektorem artystycznym Teatru Ludowego w Krakowie, gdzie jego twórczość plastyczna była wykorzystywana. W roku 1972 roku założył Warszawskie Centrum Sztuki „Studio”. Opracował scenografię i reżyserował wiele przedstawień teatralnych w kraju i za granicą. Jego prace były i są wystawiane w wielu miastach Polski i na licznych wystawach światowych.
Szajna współpracował także z teatrami we Francji, Anglii, Danii, Włoszech, Holandii, Niemczech, Izraelu, Egipcie, Turcji, aby wymienić kilka. Za popularyzację polskiego teatru na świecie został wyróżniony Nagrodą Sekcji Krytyków Teatralnych w 1992 roku.
Był członkiem Międzynarodowej Rady Oświęcimskiej. W 50. rocznicę wyzwolenia Auschwitz koordynował pracami nad wystawą stanowiącą hołd dla ofiar nazizmu. W latach 1988–1990 członek Rady Ochrony Pamięci Walk i Męczeństwa.
Jego rzeźba jest na rynku w Rzeszowie w rodzinnym mieście. Prace Szajny znajdują się w zbiorach największych polskich muzeów, a także w Muzeum Miasta Bochum, Muzeum Historii Niemiec w Bonn, Muzeum Buchenwaldu, Muzeum Narodowym w Osace, Muzeum im. Puszkina w Moskwie, Muzeum Yad Vashem w Jerozolimie, Accademii Italia delle Arti e del Lavoro w Salsmaggiore, Galerii d’Arte Cortina w Mediolanie, w kolekcji rodziny Johnssen w Essen i Vaclava Havla w Pradze.
Odznaczenia i wyróżnienia m.in.: Krzyż Kawalerski, Krzyż Komandorski, Krzyż Komandorski z Gwiazdą, Złoty Medal „Zasłużony Kulturze Gloria Artis”, nagrodę „Foundation of A. Jurzykowski” w Nowym Jorku. Pośmiertnie 6 lipca 2008 odsłonięto odcisk jego dłoni w brązie na Bursztynowej Promenadzie Gwiazd w Gdańsku.
Pierwszy raz spotkałem się w domu Józefa Szajny w Warszawie 31 sierpnia 1987 r. Kiedy wszedłem, powiedział - jestem do Pana dyspozycji. Zaczęłem się śmiać, on też. Rozmawiałem z nim dość długo o tym co robi i robiłem zdjęcia, wyłapując najciekawsze ujęcia, kiedy zastanawia się nad odpowiedzią. Muszę powiedzieć, że był niezwykłym człowiekiem. Jak mówił, to czuło się, że to jest ważne. I tak właśnie na poważnie go fotografowałem.
Wiele lat później we września 2007 r., kiedy miałem wystawę „ARTYŚĆI” w Muzeum Narodowym w Warszawie, nieopodal ekspozycji moich zdjęć, była niezwykła rzeźba Szajny „Drabina do nieba”, pamiętam, że dzięki temu, czułem się wówczas bardziej swojsko. „…To droga do nieba nas wszystkich…” − mówił o swojej »Drabinie« Szajna.
Drabina nawiązuje również do symboliki Drabiny Jakubowej. Patriarcha biblijny Jakub „ujrzał we śnie drabinę stojącą na ziemi, a wierzch jej sięgający nieba i aniołów bożych wstępujących i zstępujących po niej, i Pana wspierającego się na niej” (Gen.28, 12-13). Jak czytamy u Władysława Kopalińskiego: „Drabina ma wyobrażać wszechobecność opatrzności boskiej i zapewnienie, że droga między Ziemią a niebem jest zawsze otwarta. A tu, w wizji drabiny Szajny, mamy pozostawione na szczeblach buty. Aniołowie, ludzie idący do nieba, a buty. Buty zostały. Kiedyś patrząc na magazyny butów i protez w Auschwitz Szajna powiedział: „…Ludzi nie ma, a protezy zostały...”.

This is what the creator is talking about - who is the narrator in this film. The film is a form of recording his statements about the artist's life. Szajna somehow recognized this film as his credo.
Józef Szajna (born March 13, 1922 in Rzeszów, died June 24, 2008 in Warsaw, was buried in the Powązki Cemetery) - painter, stage designer, director, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He was born to a family of Italian or German origin, polonized for several centuries, as one of the three sons of the railway engine driver Julian Szajna and his wife Karolina née Pieniazków. During the German occupation, he was a participant in the resistance movement, active in the Union of Armed Struggle. The arrested person was sent to the KL Auschwitz concentration camp, and later to Buchenwald, he was a prisoner of the Penal Company. The camp experiences were reflected in his works. His work is a painting technique, combined with assemblage and collage, the content of which is destruction, destruction and passing.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, receiving a diploma in graphics in 1952, and a diploma in stage design in 1953. In the years 1955–1966 he was a co-founder and artistic director of the Ludowy Theater in Krakow, where his art was used. In 1972 he founded the Warsaw Art Center "Studio". He developed the scenery and directed many theater productions in Poland and abroad. His works have been and are exhibited in many Polish cities and at numerous world exhibitions.
Szajna has also collaborated with theaters in France, England, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Israel, Egypt, and Turkey to name a few. For popularizing Polish theater around the world, he was awarded the Award of the Section of Theater Critics in 1992.
He was a member of the International Auschwitz Council. On the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, he coordinated the work on the exhibition paying tribute to the victims of Nazism. In the years 1988–1990, a member of the Council for the Protection of Memory of Struggle and Martyrdom.
His sculpture is on the market square in Rzeszów in his hometown. Szajna's works are in the collections of the largest Polish museums, as well as in the Bochum City Museum, the German History Museum in Bonn, the Buchenwald Museum, the National Museum in Osaka, the Pushkin in Moscow, Yad Vashem Museum in Jerusalem, Accademii Italia delle Arti e del Lavoro in Salsmaggiore, Galeria d'Arte Cortina in Milan, in the collection of the Johnssen family in Essen and Vaclav Havel in Prague.
Decorations and distinctions, among others: Knight's Cross, Commander's Cross, Commander's Cross with a Star, Gold Medal for Merit to Culture Gloria Artis, award of the Foundation of A. Jurzykowski in New York. Posthumously, on July 6, 2008, his handprint in bronze was unveiled on the Amber Promenade of Stars in Gdańsk.
I met for the first time at Józef Szajna's house in Warsaw on August 31, 1987. When I entered, he said - I am at your disposal. I started laughing, so did he. I talked to him for a long time about what he was doing and took pictures, catching the most interesting shots as he ponders the answer. I must say he was an amazing man. As he said, it felt like it was important. And that's how I seriously photographed him.
Many years later, in September 2007, when I had the "ARTISTS" exhibition at the National Museum in Warsaw, near the exhibition of my photos, there was Szajna's unusual sculpture "The Ladder to Heaven". I remember that thanks to that, I felt more at home then. "... This is the way to heaven for all of us ..." Szajna said about his »Ladder«. The ladder also refers to the symbolism of Jacob's Ladder. The biblical patriarch Jacob "saw in a dream a ladder standing on the ground, its top reaching heaven, and the angels of God ascending and descending, and the Lord leaning on it" (Gen.28: 12-13). As we read in Władysław Kopaliński: "The ladder is to represent the omnipresence of divine providence and the assurance that the path between the earth and heaven is always open. And here, in Szajna's vision of the ladder, we have shoes left on the rungs. Angels, people going to heaven, and shoes. The shoes stayed. Once, when looking at the shoe and prosthesis warehouses in Auschwitz, Szajna said: "... The people are gone, and the prostheses are left ...".
