Urodziła się w Richmond w Wirginii jako córka Kathlyn Corinne Beaty (z domu MacLean; 1903-1993), nauczycielki teatralnej z Nowej Szkocji, i Iry Owensa Beaty’ego (1903-1987), profesora psychologii, administratora szkół publicznych i agenta nieruchomości. Jej ojciec był Amerykaninem z Wirginii, a matka Kanadyjką z Cape Breton w Nowej Szkocji. Jej młodszy brat, Warren Beatty, który zmienił nazwisko z Beaty na Beatty, to aktor i reżyser.

Shirley MacLaine, actually Shirley MacLean Beaty (born April 24, 1934 in Richmond, Virginia) - American actress, singer, dancer, writer and social activist, Oscar winner, known for her many film roles.
She was born in Richmond, Virginia to Kathlyn Corinne Beaty (née MacLean; 1903-1993), a drama teacher from Nova Scotia, and Ira Owens Beaty (1903-1987), a psychology professor, public school administrator, and real estate agent. Her father was American from Virginia and her mother was Canadian from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Her younger brother, Warren Beatty, who changed his name from Beaty to Beatty, is an actor and director.
In 1954, she married Steve Parker. They divorced in 1970. He has one daughter, Stephanie (Sachi).
She began her stage career in 1950 in Oklahoma as a dancer. She made her screen debut in Alfred Hitchcock's The Trouble with Harry (1956). In 1970, she had a series of TV shows called Shirley's World. From 1977, she performed in Las Vegas in her own show, with which she toured Europe and South America.
She has been nominated four times for the Academy Awards, including for the lead role in Billy Wilder's The Apartment. She has won many foreign awards (including at the festivals in Venice and Berlin, as well as awards from the British Film Academy).
