„…Rzeczy, które nie wynikają z mody, żyją dłużej. Życie jest piękne i trzeba je znosić, a myślenie ma kolosalną przyszłość…” – Rosław Szaybo.
Spotykaliśmy się przy różnych okazjach w Warszawie, na poważną sesję zdjęciową, jak również nagranie filmowe, umówiłem się z Rosławem 3 sierpnia 2011 r. w ASP w Warszawie. Pamiętam, że zapytał mnie przez telefon – jak mam być ubrany? Powiedziałem – artystycznie. Zaśmiał się szelmowsko i powiedział – to już wszystko wiem. Sami zobaczcie, jak był ubrany, chyba nie można lepiej – cały Szaybo. Muszę powiedzieć, że bardzo mi go brakuje, zawsze mogłem się go zapytać, jak coś pokazać, jak miałem dylemat. Wydawało się, że na wszystko miał sposób.
Rosław Szaybo (ur. 13 sierpnia 1933, Poznań – zm. 21 maja 2019, Warszawa) – malarz, fotograf i artysta grafik.
W 1955-1961 r. studiował na Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Warszawie, w pracowni malarstwa Wojciecha Fangora i plakatu Henryka Tomaszewskiego.
W 1966 roku przeniósł się do Wielkiej Brytanii, gdzie pracował jako niezależny projektant. W latach 1968-1972 pracował jako dyrektor artystyczny w firmie reklamowej Young & Rubicam (1967-1972). W latach 1972-1988 był głównym dyrektorem artystycznym CBS Records (Columbia Broadcasting System), gdzie zaprojektował ponad 2000 okładek płyt, głównie z muzyką klasyczną, ale także dla artystów takich jak Elton John, Roy Orbison, Santana, Janis Joplin, The Clash, Mott the Hoople, Judas Priest i John Williams.
Pracował również dla takich firm, jak Heinz, Yardley, Player's, Rank Xerox, współpracował m.in. z British Film Institute, Imperial War Museum, London Zoo, Panther Books, Sadler Welles Theatre, Almeida Theatre, Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, London Transport.
Podczas swojej pracy w Wielkiej Brytanii projektował również plakaty dla angielskich teatrów.
Po powrocie do Polski w 1993 roku rozpoczął Pracownię Fotografii Kreacyjnej na Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Warszawie, a także został kierownikiem artystycznym w wydawnictwie Czytelnik.
Zaprojektował plakat anonsujący udział Polski na EXPO'92 w Sewilli. Współpracował m.in. z Polskimi Nagraniami, Polskim Stowarzyszeniem Jazzowym, Instytut Fryderyka Chopina.
Do jego najbardziej rozpoznawalnych dzieł należą okładki albumów: "Elton John" (1979), "Bertold Brecht - Opera za trzy grosze" (1985), "29. Jazz nad Odrą'94" (1994), "Szare w kolorze 1956-70".
Szaybo miał wiele wystaw indywidualnych m.in. w Londynie (1977, 1987, 1988), Poznaniu (1981), Warszawie (1988, 2001, 2003), Stirling (1989), Budapeszcie (1989), Ostrowie Wielkopolskim (1992), Sztokholmie (1994), Lublinie (2000).
W 2013 roku warszawska Kordegarda pokazała dorobek Rosława Szaybo i Stanisława Zagórskiego, kolejnego polskiego grafika, który osiągnął sukces w Stanach Zjednoczonych, który zaprojektował mój pierwszy katalog w Nowym Jorku w 1981 r.
Nagradzany i odznaczony Złotym Medalem „Zasłużony Kulturze Gloria Artis” (2018), nagrody "Szpilek" za rysunek satyryczny (1959), przez wiele kolejnych, m.in. nagrody w konkursach "Music Week" czy "New Musical Express" na najlepszą okładkę płytową, po nagrodę na XIV Biennale Plakatu Fotograficznego w Płocku (2007).
„…Pamiętam, że zanim zrobiłem okładkę do IX Symfonii, to najpierw przeczytałem o Beethovenie, o końcówce jego życia, o tym, że tracił słuch, który jest ważny dla muzyka jak dla grafika oczy, o tragedii wielkiego człowieka, o jego wspaniałej „lwiej głowie”. Rozumując jak grafik użytkowy, udałem się do sklepu z płytami muzycznymi, w którym było dwadzieścia nagrań IX Symfonii Beethovena, z różnych wytwórni płytowych. Przejrzałem je i postanowiłem wygrać. Chciałem, żeby to moja okładka była tą, którą każdy najchętniej zabierze ze sobą do domu. Proste i straszliwie egoistyczne myślenie. Ale to egoistyczne myślenie wynikało również z tego, że byłem dyrektorem kreatywnym wielkiej firmy fonograficznej, za co dostawałem duże pieniądze, więc chciałem tym, którzy mi płacili, dać szansę skorzystania z moich zdolności. W efekcie moja okładka do IX Symfonii Beethovena została uznana za najlepszą okładkę roku do muzyki klasycznej na terenie Wielkiej Brytanii…” – Rosław Szaybo.

We met on various occasions in Warsaw, for a serious photo session as well as a film recording, I had an appointment with Rosław on August 3, 2011 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. I remember that he asked me on the phone - how should I be dressed? I said - artistically. He laughed mischievously and said, I already know all that. See for yourself how he was dressed, it can't be better - all Szaybo. I must say that I miss him a lot, I could always ask him how to show something when I had a dilemma. There seemed to be a way for everything.

In 1972-1988 he was the chief artistic director of CBS Records (Columbia Broadcasting System), where he designed over 2,000 album covers, mostly with classical music, but also for artists such as Elton John, Roy Orbison, Santana, Janis Joplin, The Clash, Mott the Hoople, Judas Priest and John Williams.
He also worked for companies such as Heinz, Yardley, Player's, Rank Xerox, from British Film Institute, Imperial War Museum, London Zoo, Panther Books, Sadler Welles Theater, Almeida Theater, Lyric Theater, Hammersmith, London Transport.
During his work in Great Britain, he also designed posters for English theaters.
After returning to Poland in 1993, he started the Creative Photography Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and also became the artistic director of the Czytelnik publishing house. He designed a poster announcing Poland's participation at EXPO'92 in Seville. He collaborated, among others with Polskie Nagrania, the Polish Jazz Association, and the Fryderyk Chopin Institute.
His most recognizable works include album covers: "Elton John" (1979), "Bertold Brecht - Opera for three grosze" (1985), "29. Jazz on the Odra'94" (1994), "Gray in color 1956-70 ".
Szaybo had many individual exhibitions, incl. in London (1977, 1987, 1988), Poznań (1981), Warsaw (1988, 2001, 2003), Stirling (1989), Budapest (1989), Ostrów Wielkopolski (1992), Stockholm (1994), Lublin (2000).
In 2013, the Warsaw-based Kordegarda showed the works of Rosław Szaybo and Stanisław Zagórski, another Polish graphic designer who achieved success in the United States, who designed my first catalog in New York in 1981.
He was awarded and decorated with the Gold Medal "Zasłużony Kulturze Gloria Artis" (2018), and "Szpilek" awards for satirical drawing (1959), for many more, incl. awards in the "Music Week" and "New Musical Express" competitions for the best album cover, for the award at the 14th Photographic Poster Biennale in Płock (2007).
"... I remember that before I made the cover for the Ninth Symphony, I first read about Beethoven, about the end of his life, about the loss of hearing, which is important for a musician as for a graphic artist's eyes, about the tragedy of a great man, about his wonderful" lion head. " Reasoning like a utility graphic, I went to a record store that had twenty recordings of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony from various record companies. I looked through them and decided to win. I wanted my cover to be the one that everyone would most likely take home with them. Simple and terribly selfish thinking. But this selfish thinking was also due to the fact that I was the creative director of a large record company, for which I was paid a lot, so I wanted to give those who paid me a chance to use my abilities. As a result, my cover for Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was recognized as the best cover of the year for classical music in Great Britain… ”- Rosław Szaybo.
