Urodziła się w Detroit, w stanie Michigan jako córka Lillie Mae (z domu Ford; ur. 14 stycznia 1914, zm. 12 lipca 2005), asystentki pielęgniarki, i Guya Tomlina (ur. 3 marca 1913, zm. 24 października 1970), pracownika fabryki. Jej rodzice byli ochrzczeni w Południowej Konwencji Baptystów w Paducah w Kentucky i przeprowadzili się do Michigan w czasie wielkiego kryzysu gospodarczego. W programie Saturday Night Live (1976–1977) parodiowała Farrah Fawcett, pięcioletnią Edith Ann i operatorkę telefoniczną Ernestine. Za rolę Margo Sperling w komedii Roberta Bentona Ostatni seans (1977) została uhonorowana Srebrnym Niedźwiedziem na Międzynarodowym Festiwalu Filmowym w Berlinie. W melodramacie Chwila za chwilą (Moment By Moment, 1978) z Johnem Travoltą zagrała postać zamożnej Trish Rawlings w średnim wieku, cierpiącej na samotność po rozstaniu z mężem. Jako Edwina Cutwater w komedii fantastycznej Carla Reinera Dwoje we mnie (All of Me, 1984) u boku Steve’a Martina była nominowana do Złotego Globu dla najlepszej aktorki w filmie komediowym lub musicalu.

W 1977 na Broadwayu, jako pierwsza kobieta, wystąpiła w monodramie Appearing Nitely. 28 marca 1977 trafiła na okładkę tygodnika „Time” nazywana „Nową Amerykańską Królową Komedii”.

Zebrała dobre recenzje za rolę Elle Reid, owdowiałej lesbijki wspierającej finansowo zbierającą na aborcję wnuczkę w komediodramacie Babka (Grandma, 2015) z Samem Elliottem, Marcią Gay Harden i Judy Greer. W 2015 przyjęła rolę Frances „Frankie” Bergstein (z domu Mengela) w serialu Netflixa Grace i Frankie obok Jane Fondy.

Stała się znana ze swojej działalności na rzecz walki z AIDS i ochrony środowiska oraz społeczności LGBT. Razem z Jane Wagner ufundowała centrum kulturalne w Centrum LGBT w Los Angeles i ogród w Centrum Zdrowotnym LGBT w Bostonie. Za swoje wysiłki została odznaczona m.in. Nagrodą Złotego Serca Fundacji Honickman. Była zaangażowana w działalność na rzecz ochrony słoni i współpracuje z poświęconymi temu organizacjami na całym świecie. Odebrała nagrodę Emmy za narrację filmu dokumentalnego HBO W obronie słoni (An Apology to Elephants, 2013).

Jest lesbijką i chociaż Tomlin publicznie przyznała się do homoseksualizmu w wywiadzie dla prasy w 2001, to nigdy tego nie ukrywała. W 1971 związała się z pisarką Jane Wagner, z którą zalegalizowała związek 31 grudnia 2013.

  Lily Tomlin, born Mary Jean Tomlin (September 1, 1939, Detroit), is an American film, stage, and television actress.

She was born in Detroit, Michigan, as the daughter of Lillie Mae (née Ford; born January 14, 1914, died July 12, 2005), a nurse’s aide, and Guy Tomlin (born March 3, 1913, died October 24, 1970), a factory worker. Her parents were baptized in the Southern Baptist Convention in Paducah, Kentucky, and moved to Michigan during the Great Depression. She grew up with her younger brother, Richard. From an early age, she displayed a talent for comedy, and her idols included Lucille Ball and Imogene Coca. In 1957, she graduated from Cass Technical High School. After finishing high school, she began medical studies in biology at Wayne State University. She auditioned for a stage production, which sparked her interest in a career in theater and led her to change her field of study.

She abandoned her studies in favor of performing as a comedian in clubs and cafés. She began doing stand-up comedy in nightclubs in Detroit and later in New York City. She studied acting at the Herbert Berghof Studio. In 1965, she made her first television appearance on the talk show The Merv Griffin Show, and subsequently hosted the CBS program The Garry Moore Show (1966–1967) and the ABC series The Music Scene (1969). Her career gained momentum thanks to her engagement on NBC’s Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In (1969–1973), where she was cast in a wide variety of female roles. She was also one of the first women comedians to perform in male disguise and earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a television series, miniseries, or television film. In 1972, she won a Grammy Award for the comedy album This Is a Recording.

She regularly appeared in television series and films. Her portrayal of a gospel singer raising two deaf children in Robert Altman’s musical drama Nashville (1975) earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, a British Academy Film Award nomination for Most Promising Newcomer in a Leading Role, and two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Most Promising Newcomer. On Saturday Night Live (1976–1977), she parodied Farrah Fawcett, portrayed the five-year-old Edith Ann, and the telephone operator Ernestine. For her role as Margo Sperling in Robert Benton’s comedy The Late Show (1977), she was awarded the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. In the melodrama Moment by Moment (1978), opposite John Travolta, she played the role of Trish Rawlings, a wealthy middle-aged woman suffering from loneliness after separating from her husband. As Edwina Cutwater in Carl Reiner’s fantasy comedy All of Me (1984), alongside Steve Martin, she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.

In 1977, she became the first woman to appear on Broadway in a one-woman show,  Appearing Nitely. On March 28, 1977, she appeared on the cover of Time magazine, which dubbed her “The New Queen of American Comedy.”

In 1985, she appeared on Broadway in the satirical one-woman show The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, written by her partner Jane Wagner, for which she received a Tony Award. In 2009, she performed on Broadway in the monodrama Not Playing with a Full Deck.

She received strong reviews for her role as Elle Reid, a widowed lesbian who financially supports her granddaughter raising money for an abortion, in the comedy-drama Grandma (2015), co-starring Sam Elliott, Marcia Gay Harden, and Judy Greer. In 2015, she took on the role of Frances “Frankie” Bergstein (née Mengela) in the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, opposite Jane Fonda.

She became well known for her activism in the fight against AIDS, environmental protection, and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community. Together with Jane Wagner, she founded a cultural center at the Los Angeles LGBT Center and a garden at the Boston LGBT Health Center. For her efforts, she was honored with numerous awards, including the Honickman Foundation Golden Heart Award. She has also been involved in elephant conservation and collaborates with organizations dedicated to their protection around the world. She received an Emmy Award for narrating the HBO documentary An Apology to Elephants (2013).

She is a lesbian, and although Tomlin publicly acknowledged her sexual orientation in a press interview in 2001, she had never concealed it. In 1971, she entered into a relationship with writer Jane Wagner, with whom she legally married on December 31, 2013.
