David Royston Bailey (ur. 2 stycznia 1938 r. w Londynie) – artysta fotograf.
Bailey już od początku był nietuzinkowy w swoich poczynaniach, porzucił szkołę średnią, aby służyć w Royal Air Force, gdzie zainteresował się fotografią Henri Cartiera-Bressona. Po powrocie do Anglii, Bailey zaczął pracować jako asystent fotografa mody Johna Frencha. W latach 60. i 70. artysta zwrócił uwagę prasy po serii głośnych małżeństw z Jeanem Shrimptonem, Catherine Deneuve i Marie Helvin. W 1965 roku opublikował swoją pierwszą książkę fotograficzną „Box of Pin-Ups”, zbiór czarno-białych zdjęć przedstawiających Micka Jaggera, The Beatles, Twiggy i Andy'ego Warhola, a także kilka innych postaci celebrytów.
Przez ponad trzydzieści lat od 1959 r. David Bailey robił okładki dla brytyjskich, francuskich i włoskich wydań „Vogue”. Co ciekawe, Bailey fotografował swoje modele poza miastem i studiem, czym zmienił zwyczaje w fotografii mody, a już w 1963 r. „Vogue” ogłosił go jako „fotografa nowej fali”. Uczył się od tak znanych fotografów jak Cecil Beaton i Tony Armstrong-Jones.
Bailey obok Newtona był jednym z najlepiej zarabiających fotografów europejskich. Należy do tzw. sosiety, jeździ jaguarami, rolls-royce'ami i range roverami. W jego życiu przewinęła się cała plejada niesamowitych kobiet: Jean Shrimpton, Catherine Deneuve, Penelope Tree, Marie Helvin. Z Catherine Deneuve Bailey ożenił się w 1965 r., osiem tygodni po zdjęciach dla „Playboya”, a jego świadkiem był Mick Jagger. W 1966 r. powstał film „Powiększenie” Antonionego, który był hołdem oddanym Baileyowi.
Oprócz pracy dla największych pism, wydaje albumy „Goodbye Baby and Amen”, „Nudes”, z portretami największych ludzi: Andy Warhola, Brigitte Bardote, Candice Bergen, Romana Polańskiego, Rudolfa Nureyeva, Michaela Caine, Petera Ustinowa, Frederico Felliniego, Juliana Schnabela, z których wielu należy do jego bliskich przyjaciół. Dużo również wystawia w najbardziej prestiżowych miejscach jak choćby w Victoria & Albert Museum i National Portrait Gallery w Londynie, oraz International Center of Photography w Nowym Jorku.
Bailey za swoje osiągnięcia był wyróżniany, otrzymał tytuł od królowej Elżbiety II jako dowódca Orderu Imperium Brytyjskiego, a w 2016 roku nagrodę za całokształt twórczości od Międzynarodowego Centrum Fotografii w Nowym Jorku. Fotografie artysty przechowywane są w zbiorach National Portrait Gallery oraz Victoria and Albert Museum w Londynie. Bailey obecnie mieszka i pracuje w Londynie.
Od początku lat 70.tych, kiedy zainteresowałem się fotografią obserwowałem w mediach artystyczne poczynania Davida Bailey.
Będąc w Polsce w latach 70.tych nie myślałem, że mogę go kiedykolwiek spotkać osobiście, a już fotografować, to marzenie ściętej głowy. Kiedy w 1979 r. wyjechałem do Nowego Jorku, to marzenie się zrealizowało w lutym 1984 r. kiedy miał dużą wystawę w Internetional Center of Photography w Nowym Jorku. Ten gigant fotografii, okazał się niezwykle miłym i przystępnym facetem, którego nie tylko fotografowałem, ale również rozmawiałem z nim do nowojorskiego magazynu „Kariera”. Kiedy już zrobiliśmy zdjęcia, rozpoczęło się uroczyste otwarcie w ICP, które prowadził Cornell Capa, również fotograf, brat legendarnego Roberta Capy fotografa wojnennego, założyciela Grupy Magnum, który w 1954 r. zginął robiąc zdjęcia na wojnie.
Przez lata nie miałem z Bailey kontaktu i teraz ostatnio zobaczyłem jego zdjęcie. Najpierw pomyślałem, że to ktoś inny…Ale okazało się, że to on, od moich zdjęć upłynęło prawie 40 lat. Dla mnie pozostanie, taki jaki był w 1984 r. To niewątpliwa siła i magia fotografii.

From the beginning, Bailey was extraordinary in his actions, he dropped out of high school to serve in the Royal Air Force, where he became interested in photography of Henri Cartier-Bresson. After returning to England, Bailey began working as an assistant to fashion photographer John French. In the 1960s and '70s, the artist drew the press's attention after a series of high-profile marriages with Jean Shrimpton, Catherine Deneuve and Marie Helvin. In 1965, he published his first photographic book, Box of Pin-Ups, a collection of black and white photos depicting Mick Jagger, The Beatles, Twiggy and Andy Warhol, as well as several other celebrity characters.
For over thirty years since 1959, David Bailey has been making covers for the British, French and Italian editions of Vogue. Interestingly, Bailey photographed his models outside the city and studio, which changed the habits in fashion photography, and as early as 1963 "Vogue" announced him as a "new wave photographer." He learned from such famous photographers as Cecil Beaton and Tony Armstrong-Jones.
Next to Newton, Bailey was one of the highest paid European photographers. It belongs to the so-called sauces, drives jaguars, rolls-royce and range rovers. A whole galaxy of amazing women has gone through his life: Jean Shrimpton, Catherine Deneuve, Penelope Tree, Marie Helvin. He married Catherine Deneuve in 1965, eight weeks after shooting for Playboy, and his witness was Mick Jagger. In 1966, the film "Enlargement" by Antoniona was made, which was a tribute to Bailey.
In addition to working for the largest magazines, he publishes the albums "Goodbye Baby and Amen" and "Nudes", with portraits of the greatest people: Andy Warhol, Brigitte Bardote, Candice Bergen, Roman Polanski, Rudolf Nureyev, Michael Caine, Peter Ustinow, Frederico Fellini, Julian Schnabel many of whom belong to his close friends. He also exhibits a lot at the most prestigious venues such as the Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in London, as well as the International Center of Photography in New York. Bailey was honored for his achievements, received the title from Queen Elizabeth II as commander of the Order of the British Empire, and in 2016 the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Center of Photography in New York. The artist's photographs are kept in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Bailey currently lives and works in London.
From the beginning of the 1970s, when I became interested in photography, I watched the artistic activities of David Bailey in the media. Being in Poland in the 70s I did not think that I could ever meet him in person, and photograph, it is a dream of a beheaded. When I went to New York in 1979, this dream came true in February 1984 when he had a large exhibition at the Internetional Center of Photography in New York. This giant of photography turned out to be an extremely nice and approachable guy whom I not only photographed but also talked to him in the New York magazine "Career". Once we took the pictures, the ceremonial opening at the ICP began, which was led by Cornell Capa, also a photographer, brother of the legendary Robert Capa war photographer, founder of the Magnum Group, who died in 1954 taking photos in the war. I had no contact with Bailey for years and now I have seen his picture recently. First, I thought it was someone else ... But it turned out that it was him, almost 40 years have passed since my photos. For me it will remain as it was in 1984. It is undoubtedly the power and magic of photography.
