–Tadeusz Dominik.

Tadeusz Dominik (ur. 14 stycznia 1928 w Szymanowie, zm. 20 maja 2014 w Warszawie) – polski malarz, grafik, rzeźbiarz, twórca tkanin artystycznych i ceramik.

Pochodził z ubogiej rodziny rolniczej. W latach 1946–1951 studiował malarstwo w Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Warszawie. Dyplom uzyskał w 1953 w pracowni Jana Cybisa.

PORTRAIT with HISTORY Tadeusz Dominik

“…My painting is entirely the result of an openness to nature; it is inspired by nature. I do not illustrate nature, but through my paintings I open a path for the viewer to experience it in their own way…” — Tadeusz Dominik.

Tadeusz Dominik (born January 14, 1928, in Szymanów; died May 20, 2014, in Warsaw) was a Polish painter, graphic artist, sculptor, and creator of artistic textiles and ceramics.

He came from a poor farming family. From 1946 to 1951, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, receiving his diploma in 1953 from the studio of Jan Cybis. Even before completing his studies, he became an assistant in Wacław Waśkowski’s studio at the Faculty of Graphic Arts. He received scholarships from the French Government (1958–1959) and the Ford Foundation (1961–1962). At the Academy, he progressed through every stage of the academic career, from assistant to full professor, a position he attained in 1988. He served twice as Dean of the Faculty of Painting, from 1971 to 1974 and from 1987 to 1989. He retired in 1990. Immediately after his studies, Dominik concentrated on graphic arts, and from the mid-1950s onward, he worked in painting and artistic textiles. He made his debut in 1951 at the Seventh Exhibition of Fine Arts in Radom. His first solo exhibition was held at the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 1957. He made his international debut at the 28th Venice Biennale in 1956, presenting a series of woodcuts entitled Motherhood.

His works are held in the collections of Poland’s National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków, Poznań, Wrocław, and Szczecin, as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Caracas, the Albertina in Vienna, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and private collections in Poland and abroad.

“…I had the opportunity to visit Tadeusz Dominik on October 14, 2008, in his studio in Łomianki. I must say that he was an exceptionally warm and modest man and, in my observation, a great artist…” — Czesław Czapliński.

Dominik died on May 20, 2014, and was buried in the Avenue of the Distinguished at the Powązki Military Cemetery in Warsaw.

Tadeusz Dominik’s painting is characterized by a style that combines abstract motifs inspired by nature with the traditions of Polish Colorism. Rather than illustrating nature, he encouraged viewers to experience it individually. The poet Zbigniew Herbert described Dominik’s world as “fiery, sunny circles, flowers, sticks in a fence, jugs, loaves of bread, grass.”

Dominik’s works were also presented in numerous temporary solo and group exhibitions, including the Guggenheim International Award in New York (1958); Galerie Lambert in Paris (1959); Galerie für Moderne Kunst Varrelbisch in Hamburg (1988); Stara Kordegarda in Warsaw (1988); Gallerie Lanterna in Stockholm (1990); the exhibition Tadeusz Dominik and His Students at the Museum of the Warsaw Archdiocese (1992); and Expo ’92 in Seville.
