Francesco Scavullo (ur. 16 stycznia 1921 r. na Staten Island w Nowym Jorku – zm. 6 stycznia 2004 r. w Nowym Jorku) – fotograf mody.
W nowojorskim magazynie „Kariera” (1993) pisałem: „…W wieku 16 lat został asystentem znanego wówczas fotografa mody Horsta w Vogue Studio. W 1950 roku otworzył swoje studio na 63rd Street na Manhattanie, które w tym samym miejscu prowadził przez lata.
Już w wieku 19 lat zrobił pierwszą okładkę dla magazynu „Seventeen” skierowanego do kobiet, z którym związany był przez lata, a jego okładki stały się wzorem dla innych. Założenie redaktora naczelnego było takie, że każdego miesiąca okładka musiała być diametralnie różna od poprzedniej. To w dużej mierze spowodowało, że Scavullo musiał cały czas eksperymentować i poszukiwać nowych technik oświetlenia, kompozycji, modelek... Później pracował dla wszystkich ważniejszych magazynów: „Town & Country', „Harpers Bazaať, „Cosmopolitan”, „Vogue”, „IntervieW', „Time”, „Life”, „Newsweek”, „People”, „Esquire”, oprócz tego jego zdjęcia znajdowały się na plakatach filmowych, okładkach książek i płyt.
Jest autorem kilku albumów fotograficznych: „Scavullo on BeautY', „Scavullo Men”, „Scavullo Women”, „Scavullo”.

Piękno zaczerpnięte z fotografii mody przysparza mu bogatych klientów, a charakter, który stara się znaleźć w twarzy modela, nadaje rangę sztuki jego fotografiom. Zdjęcia Scavullo są w kolekcji Metropolitan Museum of Art w Nowym Jorku…”.
Od samego początku (1979) mego pobytu w Nowym Jorku przyglądałem się portretom Scavullo publikowanym w najlepszych magazynach, często na okładkach, gdyż oprócz zdjęć mody, robił portrety osobistości, z których ja również sporo fotografowałem: Calvin Klein, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Janis Joplin, Kim Basinger, Diana Ross, Brad Pitt, Mick Jagger, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Debbie Harry, Madonna… Kiedy już w listopadzie 1984 r. miałem umówione zdjęcia ze Scavullo, zastanawiałem się, jak go sfotografować, jak będzie ubrany…?
Muszę powiedzieć, że nie zawiódł, to co w sumie w krótkim czasie zrobiłem, bez specjalnej aranżacji, było oryginale. Już na samym końcu, zdjęcie uspokojonego Scavullo w kapeluszu, jako finał. Kiedy w ub. roku (2019) na 180-lecie wynalezienia fotografii (1839), zrobiłem wystawę wybitnych fotografów w sepii, w tym właśnie portret Francesco Scavullo w kapeluszu, to była przysłowiowa kropka nad i. Czyli, co ciekawe, w sumie portret zrobiony w 1984, nabrał prawdziwej mocy w 2019. Nic dziwnego, że mówi się, iż zdjęcia nabierają wartości w czasie. Tu było potrzebne prawie czterdzieści lat.
Kiedy Francesco Scavullo zmarł – 6 stycznia 2004 r., w “The New York Times” ukazała się informacja: „… SCAVULLO - Francesco. Marek Milewicz, Donna Cerutti i cała załoga Marka & Associates opłakują stratę drogiego przyjaciela Francesco Scavullo. Francesco był dominującą siłą w fotografii mody i urody i wszyscy tęsknimy za tym wielkim artystą, tym bardzo hojnym mężczyzną. Serdeczne współczucie dla Seana Byrnesa… ”.

When last year (2019) for the 180th anniversary of the invention of photography (1839), I did an exhibition of outstanding photographers in sepia, including the portrait of Francesco Scavullo in a hat, it was a proverbial dot above and. So, interestingly, the portrait was taken in 1984, it gained real power in 2019. It is no wonder that the pictures are said to gain value over time. It took almost forty years.
When Francesco Scavullo died on January 6, 2004, the New York Times reported: “…SCAVULLO--Francesco. Marek Milewicz, Donna Cerutti and the entire staff of Marek & Associates mourn the loss of their dear friend Francesco Scavullo.
