Urodził się jako starszy syn Mary Cain Keach (z domu Peckham) i Waltera Stacy’ego Keacha Sr. (zm. 13 lutego 2003 na niewydolność serca), wykładowcy teatru w Armstrong Junior College, aktora i reżysera. Stacy Keach, born Walter Stacy Keach Jr. (born June 2, 1941, in Savannah, Georgia) is an American actor, director, screenwriter, film and television producer, and composer, known also as a narrator for PBS and Discovery.

In 2019, he received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, located at 1628 Hollywood Boulevard.

He was born the elder son of Mary Cain Keach (née Peckham) and Walter Stacy Keach Sr. (died February 13, 2003, of heart failure), a theater lecturer at Armstrong Junior College, as well as an actor and director. He grew up with his younger brother James (born December 7, 1947), who also became an actor, director, and film producer and married actress Jane Seymour.

In June 1959, he graduated from Van Nuys High School. In 1963, he earned a bachelor's degree in English and Drama from the University of California, Berkeley. He also studied at Yale University and, as a Fulbright scholar, at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

He performed Off-Broadway in MacBird! at the Village Gate (1966), playing the title role of Lyndon Johnson, the contemporary equivalent of Shakespeare's Macbeth; in George Tabori's The Niggerlovers (1967), alongside the then-debuting Morgan Freeman; and on Broadway in Indians (1969), in which he played Buffalo Bill. He also appeared at the avant-garde musical theater in The Nude Paper Sermon, produced by Nonesuch Records. He received numerous awards, including an Obie Award, a Drama Desk Award, and a Vernon Rice Award. He played the title role in Shakespearean productions of King Lear (2006) at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, as well as in three separate productions of Hamlet.

He began his screen career with guest appearances in the ABC television series Cavalcade of America (1953, 1955). His role as the boxer Tully in John Huston's sports drama Fat City (1972) earned him the Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award. In Franco Zeffirelli's biblical miniseries Jesus of Nazareth (1977), he portrayed Barabbas. He achieved international fame for his portrayal of private detective Mike Hammer in the CBS series Mike Hammer (1984–1987 and 1997–1998), for which he received a Golden Globe nomination in 1985. For his portrayal of Ernest Hemingway in the ZDF biographical miniseries Hemingway (1988), he received a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Emmy Award. He narrated the radio drama The Twilight Zone. In the action film When Eagles Strike (also known as Operation Balikatan, 2003), he appeared as General Thurmond, commander of a group of U.S. Special Forces whose mission was to rescue imprisoned politicians. In the Fox television series Prison Break (2005–2007), he played Henry Pope, the warden of Fox River State Penitentiary. He again portrayed a prison warden, this time a cruel and ruthless one, in the 2008 television film Ring of Death, in which he appeared alongside Johnny Messner.

He was married four times: to Kathryn Baker (from September 5, 1964, to ?), Marilyn Aiken (from 1975 to September 5, 1979), and model Jill Donahue (from May 31, 1981, to 1986). He also dated singer Judy Collins. On June 22, 1986, he married Małgorzata Tomassi, they met on the television series Mike Hammer, in which they appeared together.with whom he has two children, a son, Shannon, and a daughter, Karolina. He bought his wife a villa near Warsaw, where they spend their vacations and holidays.
